“When you wish to instruct, be brief. Every unnecessary word only pours over the side of a brimming mind.” — Cicero.

Good writing is simple. This idea may seem counterintuitive, as we often associate “good” writing with complexity, erudition, and ornate language. Simple writing is frequently the mark of genuinely skilled and successful communication.

“The finest language is mostly made up of simple, unimposing words." George Eliot

Here are six reasons why simplicity results in better writing:

  1. Simple writing is more straightforward and understood. Using basic language helps the meaning come across clearly. Flowery diction and complicated phrase structure only serve to obfuscate the meaning. Simple wording allows the ideas to shine.
  2. Simple writing holds the reader’s attention longer. Readers frequently lose concentration or scan over dense, intricate parts. Simple wording keeps the reader interested from beginning to end.
  3. Simple writing makes points stronger. When someone writes in simple words, they must be more precise and convincing. There’s no room for filler or flashy language. Each word has to earn its spot.
